Newly updated Gen 7 HydraStar actuator offers:
Faster response for reduced stopping distance
Simplified wiring - only 4 wires
Draws power only when brakes are applied - no need for ory switch
Smaller footprint requires less space for easier installation
Compare these HydraStar advantages:
Sealed unit - weather tight
Does not exceed tow vehicle manufacturers' wiring amp rating
Unit mounted bleeder fitting simplifies brake bleeding

Vastly superior to surge brakes
Eliminates the feel of being pushed by trailer, problems with backing a trailer uphill and brake drag
Easily replaces surge brakes on trailer
Meets all DOT regulations and complies with CFR-393 federal braking requirements...surge brakes are illegal in many states

HydraStar XL
Trailer Mounted Controller for Hydaulic Brakes
Developed for Horse Trailers, Boat Trailers, RVs, Car Haulers, or any trailer with
hydraulic brakes.
• Eliminates drag and pushing problems
common to surge brake actuators
• Works in reverse
• Unit installs on trailer with minimal
wiring
• No installation required in tow vehicle
• Meets or exceeds DOT regulations for
brake actuators
• Visual / audio warning alerts driver to
brake or controller problems
Description
The Carlisle HydraStar XL uses an on-board microprocessor and accelerometer to sense the amount
of braking effort being generated by the tow vehicle. It then adjusts its output and pressure to the
brakes, to provide a smooth, safe stop.
Because the HydraStar XL is mounted on the trailer it requires no wiring or installation modifications
to the towing vehicle. Any appropriate tow vehicle can be used to tow a trailer equiped with
the HydraStar XL. The hand held actuator controller plugs into the cigarette lighter and sends
signals through existing vehicle wiring to the actuator, providing adjustments to match load and
road conditions. To tow the trailer with a different, appropriate tow vehicle, all you have to do is
unplug the controller from one vehicle and plug it into the other. Any tow vehicle appropriate
for the load you're towing can be used with any trailer equipped with the HydraStar XL.
The HydraStar XL is powered by a trailer mounted battery. And, the battery is charged at all times,
thanks to the battery charger built into the actuator. Power for the built-in battery charger is drawn
from the tow vehicle's running light circuit. Therefore, the tow vehicle's running lights need to be
on whenever the trailer is being towed.
Ease of Installation
• Trailer mounted installation - unit installs by splicing into the running lights, left and right turn
signals, and ground circuits on the trailer electrical system.
• In-cab control plugs into the cigarette lighter of the tow vehicle - no additional wiring required.
Control can be shared by multiple vehicles that tow the same trailer.
Ease of Operation
• Computer smart / user friendly
• Any vehicle that can safely tow a trailer equipped with the HydraStar XL actuator and power the
trailer’s lights can make use of the automatic brake system
• The in-cab control is easy to operate and makes matching the performance of the trailer brakes to
the brakes on the tow vehicle a simple process. Buttons are provided to either increase or decrease
the amount of trailer braking (six load settings). No other adjustments are required
• The in-cab control provides a visual and audible warning whenever a problem is detected with the
trailer brake electrical system or with the HydraStar XL actuator. Status codes displayed by the unit
make system diagnosis and repair a simple process
• Unlike Surge Actuators, The HydraStar XL works in reverse
• Eliminates the feel of being pushed by the trailer that is common with surge brakes
• Eliminates the brake drag common with surge brakes on long downhill grades
Ease of Maintenance
• Weather tight, extruded aluminum enclosure protects the unit in all weather conditions
• Actuator includes an on-board 3 amp battery charger to keep the trailer battery charged at all times
Regulatory Compliant
• Fully compliant with CFR-393 federal braking requirements
• Trailer lights automatically illuminated whenever the brakes are applied, the manual stop button is
pressed, or a breakaway condition occurs
Specifications
• Works with 1, 2, and 3 axle trailers equipped with hydraulic brakes
• 12 volt DC operation
• Trailer mounted / self contained
• Microprocessor / accelerometer control
• In-cab control plugs into the vehicle cigarette lighter. No additional installation required
• Requires a 17 amp hour trailer mounted battery for proper operation (HBA-EBA sold separately)
• On-board 3 amp battery charger built into the actuator assembly - automatically keeps the trailer
battery fully charged
• Six variable load control settings
